2.0 out of 5 stars Okay guideJuly 22, 2006
I am glad to see Insight guides doing lots of guidebooks again. I used them a lot 15 years ago and appreciated their sophistication and depth. I am just back from Bali and took this new guidebook and a couple of others. Sadly it was just okay. The Lonely Planet guide was better in every respect, especially with regard to its restaurant recommendations. You feel like the Insight guy ate free a lot. But I do appreciate the photography in this book and a lot of its cultural coverage.

3.0 out of 5 stars Adequate guide book for the first time Bali goerJune 18, 2009
If you've been to Bali before, this guide book probably won't help you discover out-of-the-way places or off the beaten path restaurants and hotels.
The book presents a decent overview of the country, but I didn't think it flowed well in terms of presenting the information for a first time site seeing trip. I got the guidebook for a potential trip and must admit it didn't make the trip rank any higher than fair-to-middlin' on my list of places to go next.
The pictures are striking and some very beautiful. The Bali A to Z guide at the end is also helpful to find general information arranged alphabetically. Personally I'd have preferred this to be towards the book's beginning.
If you like Insight Guides, this probably rates as one of their B minus attempts. There are some great Insight Guides out there, alas, this isn't quite one of them.

2.0 out of 5 stars Has good high level maps/pictures, but little by way of reccomendationsFebruary 18, 2007

As we are planning a trip to Bali, this book does not provide you with a concise way to figure out what items are a "must-see" in Bali. It does have nice high level maps of each area of Bali (and Lombok - if you are interested) and colorful pictures, and breaks it up by region, but in no way helps you figure out what part of Bali to see, what to see in any part (and what isn't worth it) and where to stay. It is more a data repository of info rather than a perspective about what is good/bad. So if you want a list of everything with info about it, and not reccomendations, this book is good. If you haven't been there and need reccomendations, then this is not the book for you.
